Ginger Root - Only You
SHINBANGUMI, the new album from multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, and visual artist Cameron Lew, aka Ginger Root, rolls out in parallel with a narrative unfolding across videos. To recap the premise:
"The year is 1987 and Ginger Root has been on contract as a music supervisor for newly founded television network, Juban TV. That is, until he’s fired. Blindsided by such an event, Cameron takes matters into his own hands and starts his own media conglomerate: Ginger Root Productions. The question now is, what will they make?"
We are now five chapters into his ever-expanding story, and the latest reveals another dimension entirely.
Sonically, "Only You" finds Ginger Root firing on all cylinders, showcasing what makes this project so special – Lew's ability to weave influence beyond pastiche into a bigger picture, exploring that rarified pop pleasure center where referential meets refreshing.
Here, Lew (who just chatted with the legend Haruomi Hosono) delivers his first straightforward take on the oft-cited genre: "I wanted to sit down and be in the mindset of, if I were to write a true City Pop song, what would I want it to sound like?" The result is an anthem brimming with deep bass disco grooves, shimmering synth glissandos, and a howling outro from the school of Prince and Chaka Khan.
Out September 13th, SHINBANGUMI (which roughly translates to a new season of a show) is Ginger Root's long-awaited third LP, and first with Ghostly. It's up for pre-order now on limited edition cloud vinyl with a 3D pop-out building insert as well as CDs and cassettes.
Ginger Root is hitting the road this fall on a massive North American, European, and UK fall tour that kicks off on September 24th.
