Hanon Exercises: A Pianist's Guide to Virtuosity

Hanon Exercises

The Hanon exercises, also known as "The Virtuoso Pianist in Sixty Exercises," are a collection of exercises essential for every pianist.

Along with Carl Czerny's etudes, Hanon exercises are the most popular method for developing piano technique in the early years of study. They are designed for everyone, from beginners to professionals. Unlike etudes, exercises require almost no time for analysis and memorization. They are the key to all technical difficulties.

The collection consists of three parts with a sequential complication of the material. Each exercise has its own recommendation, for which fingers this exercise will be useful, what to pay attention to in a particular number.

Charles Louis Hanon suggested that students master the exercises sequentially, not moving on to the next until the previous ones are fully mastered, and playing all the mastered exercises at least once a day. Hanon noted that when playing, it is very important to lift your fingers high, play each note very "separately" and strictly observe the synchronicity of both hands.
