In a haunting new music video for Yungblud’s single “Zombie,” Florence Pugh takes center stage as a weary, melancholic nurse navigating the sterile corridors of a hospital. The video, released recently, casts a somber light on the emotional weight of the song.

“Zombie” is a raw, heartfelt track, born from deeply personal inspiration. Yungblud has shared that the song was written about his grandmother, who, after enduring a severe physical injury, was transformed into a shadow of her former self. The lyrics delve into “the sense of decay and disfigurement,” capturing “the shutting out of the world and the fear, in those we love, of becoming a burden or a source of shame.” For Yungblud, the song reflects a universal longing for solace “from someone or something,” a need that feels “terrifyingly human.”

Fans got a first taste of “Zombie” on March 21, when Yungblud performed it during an impromptu set at London’s Scala club. The recorded version, enriched with contributions from musicians of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, amplifies the track’s emotional depth.

“Zombie” is a glimpse into Yungblud’s forthcoming album, Idols, slated for release on June 20. Marking his first full-length project in nearly three years—since his self-titled Yungblud dropped in September 2022—the album promises to be a bold step forward. Spanning twelve tracks, Idols includes previously released singles “Hello Heaven, Hello” and “Lovesick Lullaby.” Yungblud describes the record as “a love letter to rebuilding oneself, to rock music, and to life in all its glorious chaos.” Drawing inspiration from Britpop legends like Oasis and The Verve, as well as icons such as David Bowie, Madonna, Primal Scream, and My Chemical Romance, Idols is poised to be his most ambitious work yet.
