Marina Diamandis, once known as Marina & the Diamonds, has returned with her latest album, “Princess of Power,” her first full-length project since 2021 and the inaugural release on her independent label, Queenie Records. Teaming up with producer CJ Baran, known for his work with Panic! at the Disco and Nessa Barrett, Diamandis co-wrote the album’s 13 tracks. She took full creative control over four songs—“Butterfly,” “Cuntissimo,” “Rollercoaster,” and “Everybody Knows I’m Sad”—penning them solo. The album includes the singles “Butterfly,” “Cupid’s Girl,” and “Cuntissimo.”

Early reviews of “Princess of Power” have been largely positive. Paste magazine praised Diamandis for crafting “lively synth-pop that dances between coy simplicity and bold defiance.” Fan reactions, however, are mixed: some embrace the album’s upbeat, playful energy, while others find it lackluster.

In the 2020s, Diamandis’ earlier work from “The Family Jewels” (2010) and “Electra Heart” (2012) found a new audience on TikTok. Tracks like “Bubblegum Bitch” and “Primadonna” surged in popularity, with “Bubblegum Bitch” achieving viral status despite never being a single. Diamandis welcomed the renewed attention but declined Atlantic Records’ offer to produce a music video for the song, saying she “didn’t want to revisit the past.” In 2022, “Bubblegum Bitch” earned platinum certification in the U.S. for selling one million copies. The singles “Oh No!” and “Primadonna” also went platinum in 2021, reflecting their earlier success as radio hits.
