Understanding Monster Drawings: A Guide for Parents

Let's consider a few hypotheses for this behavior.

  • The child has nightmares and draws what happens in them. This is how they get rid of the tension. But in this case, you need to understand what is causing their nightmares. What is the child doing during the day? What are they thinking about? What is bothering them? A child's brain can transform an aggressive adult (and not only an adult, but also a bully in the class) into a demon or a monster.

  • The child is trying to protect themselves from some disturbing external situation. Then observation, a warm, caring, unobtrusive conversation are necessary, and best of all, joint creativity — drawing together, playing together.

  • The child has begun to be disturbed by internal problems, voices, obsessive actions, some imaginary heroes who are now suddenly in reality. In this case, they are also trying to cope with it on their own.

  • Next hypothesis: the child watches a lot of cartoons/movies/comics, and they are so immersed in this world that they continue to live with the characters.

Whatever the case, if you are very worried about this problem and you cannot clarify the reason for it on your own, do not hesitate to consult a doctor (for example, a neurologist at the clinic, and he can then refer you to specialized specialists) or a psychologist who can establish contact with the child, talk and work through the situation.
