Social media, work environment, circle of friends, and family – everywhere we encounter expectations, evaluations, and comments. But should we allow other people's words to define who we are?

An excessive desire for approval can lead to anxiety, self-doubt, and loss of one's own identity. Why does this happen, and how can we get rid of this dependence? In this article, we will examine the psychological mechanisms of the influence of other people's opinions, as well as effective ways to learn to live by our own principles, without adjusting to other people's expectations.

Why Do We Care So Much What Others Think?

It is important for us to feel accepted and worthy of approval in the eyes of others. Praise, compliments, and positive evaluations of our behavior, achievements, or appearance have a positive effect on our self-esteem and self-confidence. Feeling our own significance and importance to other people is a basic human need, so we naturally strive for approval.

However, an excessive desire to gain approval can lead us to fall into the trap of other people's expectations. Fear of criticism, judgment, ridicule, or rejection forces us to constantly look back at other people, compare ourselves with them, and adapt to their ideas about what we should be like. In the pursuit of approval, we can lose ourselves, our values, beliefs, and individuality. Instead of living our own lives, we begin to play a role that, in our opinion, will please other people.

It is important to note that the opinions of other people can indeed be important to us, especially when it comes to our loved ones, friends, or colleagues. However, we should not allow the fear of other people's judgment to control our lives.

Freedom to Be Yourself: How to Get Rid of Dependence on Others' Opinions

  • Accept the fact that people are different and think differently. There is no need to be upset because of this. Learn to accept differences in opinions.
  • Focus on yourself. What is really important to you? What are your values and beliefs? By answering these questions for yourself, you will be able to make decisions based on your own priorities, and not the desire to please everyone around you.
  • It is important to be able to distinguish constructive criticism aimed at helping from destructive criticism aimed at hurting you or manipulating you. Constructive criticism helps us become better, while destructive criticism only hurts and makes us doubt ourselves.
  • Develop self-confidence. The more confident you are in yourself, the less you will worry about the opinion of others. Work on increasing your self-esteem, recognize your achievements and strengths.
  • Remember your uniqueness. Do not allow other people's evaluations to determine your self-worth. You are unique and valuable in yourself, regardless of what others think.

Of course, it is impossible to completely get rid of worrying about the opinions of others. However, by learning to control your reaction to it, you will be able to gain more freedom and self-confidence.
