iPhone 17 Air: Apple's Thinnest Phone Yet?

Apple has reportedly finalized the design for the iPhone 17 Air, set to debut in about six months, replacing the underperforming Plus version. American insider Jon Prosser claims to have seen the approved model of the super-thin gadget. Renders based on this information were showcased on the Front Page Tech YouTube channel.

The images reveal that the upcoming special iPhone will sport a single main camera lens, as mentioned in previous leaks. The sensor will be housed in an oval horizontal module, reminiscent of the Google Pixel 9 series. The LED flash and microphone, positioned on the opposite end of the camera, give the impression that the smartphone is winking.

A similar design concept was hinted at by Chinese insider Digital Chat Station in a Weibo microblog the day before, stating a horizontal element on the back of the upcoming iPhone 17 Air.

Furthermore, judging by the renders, the iPhone 17 Air will retain the signature Dynamic Island cutout on the front, along with the familiar set of buttons: the volume rocker and Action button will be located on the right side, while the camera button will be on the left edge of the device.

As previously reported, one of the main features of the iPhone 17 Air will be its body, which will be about 40% thinner than other modern Apple smartphones. The thickness of the gadget will be about 5.5 mm. The device's construction will utilize aluminum and titanium, which will allow achieving a combination of the lightness of the base models with the strength and reliability of the Pro versions.

Regarding key characteristics, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to receive:

  • a new 6.6-inch display, which will place it in the middle between the standard version and the flagship Pro variant, which are equipped with 6.3- and 6.9-inch screens, respectively. ProMotion technology, varying the frame rate from 1 to 120 Hz, and a new super-durable protective coating are not excluded;
  • a 48MP main wide-angle telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom;
  • a new 24MP selfie camera with six plastic lenses, which will replace the current 12-megapixel sensor with five optical elements;
  • a next-generation A19 Bionic chipset, operating together with 8 GB of RAM;
  • a new 5G chip and a proprietary Wi-Fi module.

The iPhone 17 Air is expected to debut in September 2025 alongside the other smartphones in the 17 series. It was previously assumed that the cost of the new product would be $1299, however, according to the latest data, prices for the gadget will start at $899, as in the case of the Plus version. Apple's new device will compete with the similar concept Samsung Galaxy S25, the premiere of which is also expected in the coming months.
