Euphrosyne - Morus

Black Lion Records is excited to present Morus, the debut album of the Greek post-black/doom metal band Euphrosyne, set for release on 21 March on CD and digital.

Marking their stride in the artistically unbalanced year of 2021, Efi Eva (vocals) and Alex Despotidis (guitar) united under the banner of Euphrosyne. They shared a common vision for creating dark and adventurously melodic music, constantly breaking the barriers of what post-black metal is presumed to be.

Within that first year, the singles “Thorns Above The Skies” and “Rattus” set the tone of the Athens-based band: a bleak and twisted amalgam of black and melodic metal with orchestral arrangements and vocals that range from deafening growls to melodic clean lines, immersed in the feeling of depression and isolation.

After taking some time to solidify the band’s lineup and receiving critical acclaim for the two tracks, the band was ready to enter 2022 with George Gazis (bass) and Stelios Pepinidis (drums) as vital parts of the machine and record their debut EP. Released in November 2022, the EP Keres is the first artistic statement of a band ready to staking their claim in the scene, with multifarious compositions drifting from the fierce narratives of Deafheaven, Ghostbath, and Steven Wilson to the devastating delivery of Behemoth, Gojira, and Gorgoroth.

With a series of live shows alongside Rotting Christ, Sylvaine, Ultha, Sakis Tolis, and more, Euphrosyne is establishing themselves as a new, focused, and inspired force with a strong visual identity, carving their path in the European post-metal scene.

The impending debut full-length, Morus, is an experiential concept album inspired by the loss of the guitarist Alex Despotidis’ mother to cancer in 2017. The narration begins with the realization of death and the feelings surrounding it until the final embrace, continues with the existential question “what lies beyond,” depicting pain and suffering along the way. It moves forward towards the acceptance of the image of the person who is losing the battle and the final journey towards the Asphodel Meadows—the section of the ancient Greek underworld where the majority of souls were sent to live after death.

The music was written by Alex Despotidis, the lyrics by Efi Eva, the mixing and mastering by Psychon (Septicflesh), and the artwork, as well as the band’s photoshoot, by Dimitris Tzortzis.

Euphrosyne will perform Morus in its entirety at their album release show on 28 March 2025 at Temple Athens, joined by special guests: melodic doom/death bringers Ocean of Grief and rising blackened death metal force Serement.
