The film «Eddington», directed by Ari Aster and starring Joaquin Phoenix, was honored with a seven-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, according to Deadline.

The heartfelt response to the Western deeply moved Phoenix, bringing him to tears. Director Aster shared that he felt “immensely privileged” to be at Cannes. “It’s a dream come true,” he emphasized.

The filmmaker lightheartedly admitted he wasn’t entirely sure what the audience thought of his work. “Thank you for being here. <…> I’m truly grateful for the invitation,” Aster added.

Critics have responded favorably to the film. Sophie Monks Kaufman from The Independent called «Eddington» “Aster’s funniest film to date.” Damon Wise of Deadline remarked that the project “marks a significant step forward, a film that’s more profound than it first appears, exploring COVID as a Big Bang that brought us to where we are now.”

Known for Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau Is Afraid, Aster has crafted a comedic neo-Western centered on a feud between a small-town American mayor and the local sheriff during a pandemic.

The film features a stellar cast, including Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Michael Ward, Amelie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., and William Bello.

«Eddington» is competing in the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival, vying for the Palme d’Or alongside works by Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater, Julia Ducournau, and Kelly Reichardt.
