Sun & Steel is a monster quartet consisting of some of the greatest musicians from the Norwegian avantgarde free jazz scene. Marthe Lea, Paal Nilssen-Love, Isach Skeidsvoll and Øyvind Storesund are together a bulldozer of new force to an already internationally praised scene!

Their debut album is a recording of a concert the quartet committed at the Motvind Festival at Nasjonal Jazzscene in Oslo on July 3, 2021. The feeling of covid restrictions disappeared instantly when Nilssen-Love counted the quartet in with his gong rig - and luckily the session was recorded. ”Off the Hook” is a fitting description of what went on for the next hour, and the process towards an album release was in motion during the same night. Nilssen-Love leads the train forward with a unique force, mixed with brilliant saxophone by the brilliant Marthe Lea, the balance between the massive and the calm from Øyvind Storesund’s bass - while Isach Skeidsvoll is a wildcard of brilliance with the piano from the get go.

It’s easy to forget shows within this genre in Oslo, where there are so many shows with so many brilliant performers in different constellations - and a pretty large number of internationally well- known jazz musicians in a very concentrated area. But a very few of these gigs deserve to be written into the history books. And this is definitely one of them. A future classic which shamelessly can be compared to some of the greatest legendary free jazz albums out there.
