The klingt.collective is a viennese music group founded in 2022. Its nine members are an essential part of Vienna’s experimental music scene and have been collaborating in various groups for many years. Previous collaborating projects include a.o. the klingt.orgestra, Radian, sonic luz, TWIXT and The Vegetable Orchestra.

The internet platform klingt.org has been a home for the musicians and many of those projects since the early 2000s – thus the name of the ensemble.

The nine musicians have been active in various musical fields as composers and interpreters (sound art, noise music, [free-]jazz, contemporary ensemble pieces, pop, film soundtracks, various forms of rock, etc.) before. Now they came together to explore the possibilities of collaboratively developing improvised and composed music. Variable densities is their first release on vinyl featuring a live-recording from festival densités in Lorraine/France on October 22nd 2023. „Composed ex ante and in realtime“, this piece features the improvisational and communicational skills of the collective’s members within a pre-defined musical structure in a live-setting. Over two record sides and a total length of 45 minutes, the piece, split into „variable densities“ on side A and „dense variations“ on side B, develops a maelstrom, that captures attention from the resolute opening to the very end, alternating between soft and intense, acoustic and electronic, tonal and noisy sections.
