Pink Floyd’s Pompeii Concert Film Rises Again in Stunning IMAX Glory

"Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII" Trailer Unveiled

A trailer has landed for the revamped Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII, a concert film first captured in 1972, now polished to dazzling IMAX heights. Its global premiere is slated for April 24.

Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII immortalizes a gig the band played in October 1971, set against the ancient amphitheater of Pompeii, Italy. The setlist—featuring “Echoes,” “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun,” and “One Of These Days”—rolled out a full year and a half before The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) rewrote rock history. Drummer Nick Mason calls it “a rare, singular snapshot of the band live,” caught before that iconic album’s shadow fell. This wasn’t your typical show either—a hushed, intimate affair with no crowd in sight.

The film’s been reborn from freshly unearthed 35mm originals, with prog-rock maestro Steven Wilson, frontman of Porcupine Tree, weaving a new sonic tapestry for the mix. Speaking of Wilson, his solo album The Overview drops March 14. Meanwhile, the Pompeii soundtrack will spin off on its own May 2, available in multiple formats.

Late 2024 stirred excitement with news of a Syd Barrett biopic, tracing the Pink Floyd founder’s enigmatic arc. Peter Jaysen, producer of Bob Dylan: No Direction Home, is steering the project, though the lead role’s still a mystery. The director and screenwriter gig, however, is locked down—Wash Westmoreland, of Still Alice (2014) and Colette (2018) fame, takes the helm.

On March 6, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour turned 79. His latest record, Luck and Strange, hit shelves in September 2024, featuring his daughter Romany Gilmour in its grooves.
