Fontaines D.C. Fuse Nirvana and Bring Me the Horizon in Stunning «Like a Version» Mashup
A Bold Twist on Two Rock Titans
Irish rock sensation Fontaines D.C. recently took the stage for triple j’s iconic «Like a Version» series, delivering a jaw-dropping tribute to two heavyweights of modern music: Bring Me the Horizon and Nirvana. Recorded during their Australian tour earlier this month, the performance aired on March 21, 2025, showcasing the band’s knack for weaving unexpected threads into their sound.
Kicking things off with a fiery rendition of their 2024 hit «Starburster», the Dublin quintet set the tone before diving into Bring Me the Horizon’s brooding 2013 track «Can You Feel My Heart». But halfway through, frontman Grian Chatten flipped the script, slipping into the haunting lyrics of Nirvana’s 1993 classic «Heart-Shaped Box». The result? A seamless, moody mashup that’s lighting up the airwaves.
Why This Mashup Hits Hard
Guitarist Conor Curley peeled back the curtain on the creative spark in a post-show chat. “There’s something about the vibe of ‘Can You Feel My Heart’—those electronic layers and its dark beauty—that echoes what we explored on our last album, Romance,” he said. “It takes me back to flipping through Kerrang! as a kid, soaking up that nostalgia. Bring Me the Horizon always stuck with me.”
As for Nirvana’s cameo? “’Heart-Shaped Box’ is pure gold,” Curley added. “Grian started humming it while we were tweaking the sound, and it just clicked. Why not blend the two? The instrumentation held it all together like it was meant to be.”
From Down Under to a Global Stage
The «Like a Version» slot came hot on the heels of Fontaines D.C.’s Australian run, though their plans hit a snag soon after. Chatten revealed on March 17 that a herniated disc forced the band to axe shows in Mexico and Latin America, leaving him sidelined. Still, the pre-recorded triple j session gave fans a silver lining—a sonic treat bridging past and present.
This isn’t the first time Fontaines D.C. have stirred the «Like a Version» pot lately. Back in February, DJ Porter Robinson flipped their 2024 single «Favourite» for the same segment. “It’s one of the catchiest tracks I’ve heard in ages,” Robinson raved. “That tumbling energy hooked me—it’s why I’m a fan now.”
«Like a Version»: A Legacy of Reinvention
Since its scrappy acoustic beginnings in 2004, triple j’s «Like a Version» has evolved into a polished studio showcase, pulling in giants like Billie Eilish, Childish Gambino, and Arctic Monkeys over the years. Fontaines D.C.’s latest offering adds a fresh chapter, melding Bring Me the Horizon’s raw edge with Nirvana’s timeless grit—a combo that’s got rock fans buzzing and search engines humming.
