Kirk Hammett, the 62-year-old guitar virtuoso of Metallica, is hard at work on a solo album that he claims will “shift the borders of genre.” In a candid chat with Rolling Stone, the musician confirmed long-swirling rumors about his forthcoming solo project, offering a glimpse into its creative spark.

“I’m piecing together ideas for my solo album with a real sense of purpose,” Hammett shared. “It’s shaping up to be a wild fusion of styles—everything from classical progressions one minute, to heavier riffs the next, and then suddenly something funky popping up out of nowhere.”

He hinted that vocals will weave their way into the tracks, noting that his music “practically begs for a voice.” Who will take up the mic, however, remains a mystery. Hammett, with a wry grin, admitted he’d rather not sing himself—he’s got enough on his plate as it is. He also teased one instrumental gem, The Mysterion, which he described as sounding like it was plucked from a time 2,000 years past. The piece draws inspiration from his recent dives into ancient Greek texts and other literary treasures.

Though Hammett is no stranger to the music world, this album will mark his first full-fledged solo venture. Back in 2022, he dipped his toes into solo waters with the four-track EP Portals, making this upcoming release his first standalone effort in three years. Beyond the studio, Hammett has been busy elsewhere—he recently unveiled The Collection: Kirk Hammett, a book showcasing his prized guitar collection. Fans can snag a copy for $149 through Metallica’s website or Gibson’s, the iconic guitar brand.

Meanwhile, Metallica’s latest chapter, 72 Seasons, hit the airwaves in April 2023. Just weeks ago, on March 14, the band dropped an immersive concert film that plunges viewers into a virtual reality experience.
