Streaming giant Netflix is experimenting with a cutting-edge search tool driven by artificial intelligence, according to Bloomberg.

Unlike traditional searches tied to genres or actor names, this new system, built on OpenAI technology, lets users find content based on broader prompts, including their current mood. Once a user shares what they’re feeling, the platform sifts through its vast catalog to suggest tailored matches.

Netflix is no stranger to AI and machine learning, already using them to power its recommendation algorithms, which serve up titles based on viewing history.

The company is now exploring ways to deepen AI’s role, not just in internal operations but also in filmmaking. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos believes AI can enhance the craft of moviemaking without sidelining the creative heart of the industry—writers and actors.

Still, Netflix treads carefully amid concerns about AI’s impact. In Hollywood, many worry that studios like Netflix might lean on AI to cut jobs and trim budgets, sparking debates about the technology’s role in the industry.

For now, the mood-based search is rolling out to iOS users in Australia and New Zealand. Testing will soon expand to other regions, including the United States. Unlike most Netflix updates, which reach all subscribers automatically, this feature invites users to opt in for the trial.
