Gillian Anderson May Star in New X-Files Series
Director Ryan Coogler has shared tantalizing details about his next venture following Sinners (2025)—a fresh take on the iconic The X-Files series. According to Coogler, Gillian Anderson is in talks to reprise her role as FBI Agent Dana Scully, though David Duchovny’s return as Fox Mulder remains uncertain.
Coogler is slated to helm the third installment of his Black Panther series for Marvel Studios, following the success of the 2018 and 2022 films. However, during an appearance on the Last Podcast on the Left, the director and screenwriter confirmed that his immediate focus after Sinners will be the new X-Files series. While he kept the plot under wraps, Coogler hinted at a thrilling direction, promising episodes that could send chills down viewers’ spines:
«This project has been on my mind for a long time, and I’m eager to dive back in. If we get it right, some episodes will be downright terrifying. We’re aiming to create something truly special, delighting longtime X-Files fans while welcoming new viewers.»
The participation of 56-year-old Gillian Anderson and 64-year-old David Duchovny has yet to be confirmed. Coogler revealed he’s been in discussions with Anderson, suggesting a strong possibility of Scully’s return. Mulder’s comeback, however, seems less certain for now:
«Fingers crossed [that Anderson signs on].»
Created by Chris Carter, The X-Files ran from 1993 to 2002, earning cult status over nine seasons. The sci-fi saga continued with a 2008 film and additional seasons in 2016 and 2018. In 2022, Anderson expressed skepticism about reviving Scully and Mulder, but Coogler’s comments suggest she may have warmed to the idea. That said, Coogler plans to introduce new characters, which could mean Anderson’s role might be limited to a cameo.
