Dune 4: Gareth Edwards Rumored to Take Over Directing

Rumors have surfaced that Gareth Edwards will direct "Dune 4." He also directed the upcoming science fiction film "Jurassic World: Dominion." Denis Villeneuve is not going to take on the fourth part. The plot should be based on the third book in Frank Herbert's cycle, "Children of Dune" (1976).

Denis Villeneuve has stated that with "Dune 3" he intends to complete his journey on the desert planet Arrakis. This will be an экранизация of the second novel, "Dune Messiah" (1969). The director and screenwriter promised a full resolution to the story of the universe's emperor, Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet.

Denis Villeneuve does not want to film adaptations of subsequent books, as he considers them too extraordinary. If Warner Bros. continues to expand the franchise, it will hand over the reins to a new director. Insider Daniel Richtman reported on his social media that the studio is eyeing Gareth Edwards. He will supposedly film at least one more "Dune" film. Whether it came to negotiations is not specified.

Edwards has considerable experience working on science fiction blockbusters. He directed the films "The Creator" (2023), "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (2016), and "Godzilla" (2014). His "Jurassic World: Dominion" will be released worldwide on July 2.

There are rumors that Denis Villeneuve is not very happy with Warner Bros.'s decision to shoot new "Dunes" – with or without him as the director. Although Villeneuve previously admitted the possibility of passing the baton to a new director. And in the main series of Frank Herbert there are as many as six books. Moreover, the first two films were successful: the first (2021) grossed $407 million worldwide with a budget of $165 million, and the second (2024) – $714 million with a budget of $190 million. So expect more "Dunes."

In 2024, the prequel series "Dune: Prophecy" about the Bene Gesserit order was released. It was renewed for a 2nd season.
