"Minecraft" has struck gold, and with its runaway success, Warner Bros. seems poised to greenlight a follow-up. In a recent interview, director Jared Hess dropped tantalizing hints about a potential "Minecraft 2," suggesting that Alex—the game’s beloved co-star—might take center stage.

The film premiered globally on April 4, whisking audiences into a quirky block-built realm where four misfits, portrayed by Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen, stumble into adventure. They’re greeted by the affable Steve, brought to life by Jack Black—a character as familiar to fans as the game’s iconic pickaxe. Alongside Alex, Steve anchors the Minecraft universe as one of its two signature avatars.

"Minecraft in theaters" has soared past expectations, claiming the strongest opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation with $157 million against a $150 million budget. By April 9, its global haul climbed to an impressive $323 million—a feat hardly surprising given Minecraft’s massive following. Reception, though, is a mixed bag: it sits at 47% from critics and 87% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 6.1 rating on IMDb.

Speaking with Deadline, Hess was pressed on whether the film’s triumph might spawn a sequel. He revealed that talks are already bubbling beneath the surface, and he’s eager to weave in ideas left on the cutting room floor. Alex, he mused, could be the beating heart of the next chapter:

"It’d be such a blast. Working on the movie was a thrill—it’s such a vast world. We had so many ideas we couldn’t fit in, though we wanted to. I’d love to dive back in for a sequel, and it feels like it’s already in the works. I’m excited. Stepping back into that universe would be a treat. The fans are having a ball too. We slipped a little tease into the end credits, and they seem over the moon about it. [...] We hinted at Alex. That’s another big name in Minecraft. You’ve got Steve and Alex. We’re definitely bringing Alex into the conversation."

A fleeting glimpse of a mysterious figure’s back during the credits has fans buzzing—and Hess has now confirmed their hunch: it’s Alex, setting the stage for what’s next.
