The Simpsons Extended Through Season 40

FX has granted The Simpsons a generous extension, renewing the beloved animated series for four additional seasons, carrying it all the way to its 40th chapter. The upcoming 37th season is poised to debut as early as this fall.

The Simpsons, a brainchild of Matt Groening, holds a venerable place in television history as one of its longest-running shows. Now 36 years strong, the series first flickered onto screens in 1989. Its 36th season kicked off in September 2024 and is slated to wrap up with its 17th episode on April 22, 2025. It seems the Simpson family’s reign over our screens is far from over. According to The Hollywood Reporter, television’s premier animated satire has secured approval for seasons 37, 38, 39, and the milestone 40th season.

While an exact premiere date for season 37 remains under wraps, as does the episode count, tradition suggests a launch in September or October. Fans can likely expect the yellow-hued clan to return in the autumn of 2025. The 40th season, meanwhile, appears to be eyeing a 2028-2029 window—though whether it will mark the grand finale remains anyone’s guess.

The creators of The Simpsons have long poked fun at the show’s seemingly eternal run. Take, for instance, the tune “They’ll Never Stop The Simpsons” from the 17th episode of season 13, Gump Roast—a cheeky nod to its unstoppable momentum. Co-creator Al Jean once mused that the series could easily stretch to a thousand episodes. By the close of season 36, the tally will stand at 787.

FX hasn’t stopped with The Simpsons. The network has also renewed other animated staples: Family Guy (1999-present) will roll on through seasons 24 to 27, American Dad! (2005-present) is set for seasons 20 to 23, and Bob’s Burgers (2011-present) will continue with seasons 16 to 19. Marcy Proietto, head of 20th Television Animation, expressed delight at the ongoing partnership with Disney+ and Hulu, the platforms streaming these shows. He voiced hope that these cult classics might entertain audiences for “hundreds of episodes” more.
