SATOMIMAGAE - Taba. Tonbo video

The third, and final, single from Satomimagae’s Taba before the album’s release this Friday, April 25, is a heady ballad that sprints more than saunters, as is customary in Satomi’s music; one of many new rhythms explored and interwoven with the rich patchwork of Taba.

Satomi storyboards “Tonbo,” or dragonfly in Japanese, as follows: “Dragonflies flying on the road at dusk. Lights from houses. Tension. Something is about to happen. Everyone keeps on living their lives. That invisible boundary between worlds that seem to be completely different but exist right next to each other.”

Taking flight, Satomi’s voice swells into a solo chorus, soars among clouds of Celtic-inflected strings, and slides back down to earth on a swirl of stuttering audio scraps. Mirroring those "completely different" worlds written into the tale of "Tonbo," the track's puzzle-piecing of distinct narrative, tonal and textural parts speaks to the polyphonic essence of Taba in all of the album’s shapeshifting wonder.

"Tonbo" is accompanied by another video by Satomi's longtime collaborator Norio. On the video, Norio notes, "In the fragmented projected perspectives that people create, they themselves flicker in and out. As I looked at what she was seeing, I created new memories externally.”
