Constantine 2 is Happening: Reeves Back as Hellblazer

Francis Lawrence, the director of the 2005 film "Constantine," has confirmed that a sequel is indeed in the works, despite rumors of its cancellation by Warner Bros. Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the occult detective John Constantine. Lawrence already has some exciting ideas for the sequel's plot.

"Constantine 2" was initially announced in 2022. However, in 2023, the new heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, announced a reboot of the DC universe. Amidst these major changes in the franchise, rumors emerged that "Constantine 2" was not part of the new leadership's plans. These rumors were dispelled later in 2023. Nevertheless, there had been no significant news about the project since then, causing concern among fans that the film might not be released.

In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Francis Lawrence ("I Am Legend") and Keanu Reeves ("John Wick") revealed that DC Studios has, in fact, given the green light to "Constantine 2" and approved the start of its development. Lawrence and Akiva Goldsman ("I Am Legend"), the producer of the first film, are actively working on the script. The director promised an exciting continuation of Constantine's story:

"We finally got the official permission to move forward with this. Akiva is writing the scripts. Keanu, Akiva, and I have some wonderful ideas that we're very excited about."

Lawrence explained that the work on the sequel was delayed due to various obstacles, including changes in leadership at Warner Bros. and DC. Lawrence and his team fought for the right to bring Constantine back to the screen, and their persistence has paid off. According to Lawrence, the studio became interested in the project largely due to the popularity of the first film and the support from fans. "Constantine" grossed $230 million worldwide with a budget of $100 million. The 60-year-old Reeves, in turn, admitted that he is eager to play Constantine again.
