Wild Tales: A Retro Crime Spree with Pedro Pascal
Lionsgate has released the first trailer for "Wild Tales," a comedy action film about a series of showdowns in the wild late 1980s. Critics have generally given the film a warm reception, even comparing it to Quentin Tarantino's cult classic "Pulp Fiction" (1994). Pedro Pascal plays one of the lead roles.
The story unfolds in Oakland in 1987 and focuses on four interconnected narratives. Pedro Pascal plays a debt collector who gets into serious trouble. The other stories revolve around a basketball player seeking revenge and a confrontation between a group of partygoers and neo-Nazi punks.
"Wild Tales" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024 and has garnered mostly positive reviews. It holds a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Movie Cricket praised the film's strong 80s atmosphere and "comically bloody scenes" in the style of "Pulp Fiction." Collider commended the humor and hardcore action, which make you forget about the plot holes. However, The Daily Beast found the film too chaotic.
"Wild Tales" is directed and written by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the duo behind the series "Billions" (2016-2023) and the film "Captain Marvel" (2019). In their new project, Boden and Fleck wanted to express their love for the music, movies, and famous people of the 80s. Therefore, special attention is paid to conveying the spirit of that era.
