Starship Troopers Gets New Adaptation by Neil Blomkamp

Columbia Pictures is poised to breathe new life into Robert A. Heinlein’s science fiction masterpiece "Starship Troopers," crafting a cinematic vision that promises to diverge sharply from Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 rendition.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the helm of this new "Starship Troopers" will be taken by 45-year-old Neil Blomkamp, who will also pen the screenplay. Alongside his wife and creative collaborator Terri Tatchell, Blomkamp will produce the project. The director’s resume boasts titles like Gran Turismo (2023), Chappie (2015), and District 9 (2009)—the latter earning him an Oscar nomination for its screenplay. Gran Turismo, a tale inspired by real-life racer Jann Mardenborough, roared to success, raking in $122 million worldwide against a $60 million budget.

Blomkamp’s take on "Starship Troopers" won’t echo Verhoeven’s remake. Instead, he aims to stay true to Heinlein’s novel, weaving its core threads into the fabric of the film while sidestepping the bold liberties Verhoeven once took.

First published in 1959, "Starship Troopers" thrusts readers into an interstellar clash between humanity and insect-like aliens. Beyond the battlefield, Heinlein probes the virtues of a militarized society, championing the notion that citizenship—and the right to vote—should be earned through service. Such ideas stirred controversy, with some critics branding the book fascist. Yet its brilliance shone through, clinching the Hugo Award for Best Novel and leaving an indelible mark on sci-fi literature.

In contrast, Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film spun the story into a biting satire, laced with anti-war undertones. He dialed up the jingoistic fervor and propaganda to theatrical heights, draping his soldiers in fetishized uniforms that whispered Nazi echoes. Some accused him of casting fascism in a flattering light, though time softened the critique. Now hailed as a cult classic, Verhoeven’s "Starship Troopers" grossed $121 million on a $105 million budget and nabbed an Oscar nod for its visual effects. The film starred Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Clancy Brown, and Seth Gilliam.
