BEN CHATWIN - The Beginning / The End
Following the release of his 2024 album Verdigris, Ben Chatwin returns with the bold and expansive double single The Beginning / The End, a dynamic pairing that propels his sound ever further into the ether. This double A-side delves into the eternal cycles of creation and collapse, drawing inspiration from the birth and death of the cosmos. The release reflects on themes of beauty, decay, and impermanence, all conveyed through rich, textured composition.
Crafted with analogue hardware pushed to its limits, Chatwin channels the raw
power of sound, saturating and compressing it to create a visceral, immersive
experience. The Beginning captures the spark of creation, while The End
contemplates a quiet dissolution.
Premiered at the Sonica Festival 2024 in Glasgow as part of an ambitious audiovisual project, these tracks are accompanied by stunning visuals from Morgan Beringer, adding a striking dimension to this exploration of existence.
Biography
Ben Chatwin is an English composer and producer based in Scotland. Formerly known as Talvihorros, he blends experimental electronics with modern classical elements, creating dense, cinematic soundscapes that balance raw intensity with emotional depth.
After several releases as Talvihorros, he began working under his own name with The Sleeper Awakes (2015). His Village Green albums—Drone Signals (2018) and Staccato Signals (2018)—along with The Hum (2020), further explored the interplay of texture, melody, and noise. Using synthesizers, guitars, strings, and unconventional acoustic instruments, he crafts immersive compositions that feel both expansive and visceral.
Championed by the late Andrew Weatherall, Maryanne Hobbs, and Optimo, Chatwin’s music extends beyond solo work. He composes for film, TV, dance, and theatre, collaborating with Film4, Warp Films, BBC, National Geographic, and Scottish Ballet.
Working from his studio, The Vennel, in Fife, he continues to push the boundaries of experimental music, shaping sound with a bold and distinctive vision.
