Rihanna Voices Smurfette in New "Smurfs" Movie
Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for "The Smurfs Movie," a hybrid of animation and live-action. In the amusing video, the Smurfs are having fun to Rihanna's song "Don't Stop the Music." Smurfette is voiced by the singer herself, who also wrote music for the film.
According to the plot, the evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel kidnap Papa Smurf. Before being kidnapped, he manages to report that the Smurf village may be in danger. The Smurf team, led by Smurfette, goes to the real world to save Papa Smurf and the entire universe from a mysterious threat. The guys find themselves in Paris, where they make new friends who are ready to help them overcome all the challenges.
As Variety writes, Rihanna - her real name is Robin Rihanna Fenty - is producing the new "Smurfs." She also wrote original songs for the film. In 2023, Rihanna jokingly said that she wanted to give her voice to Papa Smurf. For some reason, the directors Chris Miller ("Puss in Boots") and Matt Landon (producer of "The Nanny Diaries") did not appreciate her idea to voice an old man. As a result, the role went to 72-year-old John Goodman ("The Big Lebowski"):
"I tried to get the role of Papa Smurf, but it didn't work out."
The soundtrack from Rihanna will be a great gift for fans of the 36-year-old singer. After all, her latest album "Anti" was released in 2016 - 9 years ago. In 2024, the singer even hinted that she wants to end her music career. Rihanna is mainly engaged in her personal business. The singer launched the Savage X Fenty lingerie brand and the Fenty Beauty cosmetics brand. Rihanna pays a lot of attention to her family: she and rapper A$AP Rocky have two sons. Rihanna also wrote tracks for the Marvel comic book film "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" in 2022.
Rihanna and John Goodman are joined in the new film by Hannah Waddingham ("Ted Lasso"), Dan Levy ("Sex Education"), Natasha Lyonne ("Poker Face"), Kurt Russell ("The Thing"), Nick Offerman ("Parks and Recreation"), Billie Lourd ("American Horror Story"), Sandra Oh ("Killing Eve") and Octavia Spencer ("The Help"). By the way, in the two previous full-length "Smurfs" (2011, 2013), Smurfette was voiced by singer Katy Perry.
"The Smurfs Movie" will be released worldwide on July 18.
