Coniferous Trees

Coniferous plants are both ornamental and low-maintenance, earning their place as staples of the so-called "lazy" garden. Spruces, pines, and junipers, with their hardy nature, are ideal choices for those looking to swiftly transform their landscape. Whether you opt for mature specimens or young saplings, conifers can instantly elevate the aesthetic of your garden. Remarkably, these evergreens can even be planted in winter! However, there’s a catch: mistakes made during planting may not become apparent until months later—three to six months after an autumn transplant, or one to two months after a spring one. To ensure a smooth planting process, this guide offers essential insights.

When to Plant Coniferous Trees

Unlike most deciduous trees and ornamental shrubs, conifers can be planted almost year-round. Young saplings, typically under three years old, are best suited for spring planting, while winter is the prime season for transplanting mature coniferous trees and shrubs.

Spring Planting Considerations

When is the best time to plant conifers in spring? Timing is critical, as the calendar spring spans three months with vastly different weather conditions. The ideal moment is early spring, just after the ground thaws enough to dig. This is when the soil reaches a temperature of around 37°F, allowing young conifer roots to begin growing. Frosts at this stage pose little threat. However, if you miss this window and the above-ground parts of the plant start actively growing, it’s wiser to delay transplanting until autumn.

Important: Avoid transplanting ornamental conifers during bud growth!

Summer Planting Options

Planting conifers in summer is possible, but only for those with a closed root system—meaning they’re sold in pots. However, there’s a potential pitfall. It’s often unclear whether a seller has recently repotted an open-ground plant into a container to pass it off as a container-grown specimen. Such plants have a slim chance of surviving a summer transplant, even if they appear healthy at purchase and are planted in optimal conditions.

For this reason, experienced gardeners advise against planting container conifers from unverified sources in summer. These plants fare better when planted in spring or autumn.

Autumn Planting Tips

Gardeners are divided on the best time for autumn planting:

Some advocate for late August to early September, when root growth is at its peak, ensuring a successful transplant. Others argue that the optimal time is when conifers enter their winter dormancy, typically in November in many climates.

Important: Avoid transplanting during the three-week period when the plant is preparing for dormancy, as complex chemical processes are underway, and interference can harm the plant.

Winter Transplanting Benefits

Surprisingly, winter is an excellent time to transplant conifers of all kinds, particularly mature ones. Ornamental conifers, especially older specimens, are notoriously finicky about relocation. Yet, winter transplants boast near-perfect success rates, with survival rates approaching 100%. For large, mature plants, winter is not just an option—it’s the ideal season.
