McConaughey Stars in "Rivals of Amziah King" – A New Cinematic Journey

After a six-year break from the screen, Matthew McConaughey is diving back into acting with Rivals of Amziah King, a new film directed by Andrew Patterson.

The actor admits to feeling a flicker of uncertainty as he returned to set, following a hiatus spent penning his memoir Greenlights, lending his voice to animated characters, and cherishing moments with his family. Yet, he reflects that this time away sharpened his self-awareness and deepened his appreciation for his craft, underscoring the value of authenticity both in life and onscreen.

Rivals of Amziah King unfolds in the rugged expanse of southeast Oklahoma, weaving the story of a man drifting through a world of beekeepers and musicians. Here, people live by their own rules, unshackled by the need for outside approval.

Director Andrew Patterson praises McConaughey as the perfect fit for the lead, citing his free-spirited charm and knack for slipping effortlessly into intricate dramatic roles while retaining an unforced magnetism.

For McConaughey, the project has reignited his passion for acting. He’s rediscovered how much he loves the process, describing it as a kind of respite—a chance to lose himself entirely in a character.

Joining him is Angelina LukingGlass, who portrays Kateri, the protagonist’s adopted daughter reentering the family trade. McConaughey marvels at her talent, particularly her ability to listen and respond with raw sincerity in every scene.

The cast is rounded out by a stellar ensemble, including Kurt Russell, Jake Horowitz, Scott Shepherd, Rob Morgan, Tony Revolori, Owen Teague, and Bruce Davis, among others.

Beyond the film, McConaughey touched on True Detective, the series that revitalized his career in 2014. Having caught the latest season with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, he found much to admire, though his heart remains with the first season, where he brought Rust Cohle to life.

Rivals of Amziah King is set to premiere on March 10 at SXSW, marking McConaughey’s eagerly awaited return to the silver screen.
