Pride and Prejudice

Netflix has embarked on a fresh miniseries adaptation of Jane Austen’s timeless Pride and Prejudice. Here’s the full scoop on what’s in store.

About Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen’s novels have enchanted readers for over two centuries, but Pride and Prejudice reigns supreme. Published in 1813, it weaves the fiery, complex romance between wealthy aristocrat Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, daughter of a modest country squire, while painting a vivid portrait of 19th-century English gentry. More than a cornerstone of Romanticism, the novel practically invented the modern romance genre and remains a global favorite.

The story has graced screens at least 17 times, spawning series in English, Italian, Dutch, and Spanish, per The Guardian. Two adaptations stand out as fan favorites. The 1995 BBC miniseries saw Colin Firth embody a brooding Darcy—his iconic lake scene in a drenched shirt still sparks swoons—while Jennifer Ehle’s Elizabeth earned her a BAFTA. Then there’s Joe Wright’s 2005 film, with Keira Knightley’s spirited Elizabeth opposite Matthew Macfadyen’s understated Darcy, a pairing that won hearts worldwide.

Netflix’s Take

The new adaptation comes from British bestselling author Dolly Alderton and director Euros Lyn (Heartstopper). Slated for six episodes, this Pride and Prejudice vows to stay true to Austen’s text, according to its creators.

Alderton, who clinched a National Book Award for her hit Everything I Know About Love—a witty dive into the relationships and misadventures of a millennial in her 20s—brings a fresh lens. That book became a 2022 BBC series, and Netflix believes Alderton’s touch will inspire a new generation to fall for Austen’s classic.

The Cast

The miniseries boasts a dazzling lineup. Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin (Nosferatu, Black Mirror) stars as Elizabeth Bennet, with BAFTA winner Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) as Mr. Darcy. Oscar winner Olivia Colman steps into the role of the meddlesome Mrs. Bennet. Other casting details remain under wraps.

What to Expect

Fans buzzing on social media are eager to know one thing: will this version stick to the novel’s plot? Not every modern take on classic British literature stays faithful—just look at the heated debates and controversies swirling around the recent Wuthering Heights adaptation starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.

Netflix, however, has promised a «precise, classic adaptation» of the novel. Filming is set to kick off in the UK this year, setting the stage for a sumptuous return to Austen’s world.
