First Teaser for «The Naked Gun» Comedy Starring Liam Neeson Unveiled
Paramount Pictures has unveiled the inaugural teaser-trailer for the comedy «The Naked Gun», starring 72-year-old Liam Neeson in the lead role. This film serves as both a reboot and a continuation of the iconic trilogy (1988, 1991, 1994) once headlined by Leslie Nielsen (1926-2010). Neeson steps into the spotlight as the son of Nielsen’s character—a twist made all the more amusing by the near-mirror of their names.
In this new chapter, Frank Drebin (Nielsen’s character) has passed away before the story begins, yet his legacy endures. His son, Frank Drebin Jr. (Neeson), follows in his father’s footsteps, serving as a police lieutenant. Much like his predecessor, he tackles crime with a blend of unorthodox and often hilarious tactics. The teaser offers a glimpse of his antics, showing him sneaking up on a robber disguised… as a little girl.
Known for his rugged roles in action-packed thrillers like «Non-Stop» (2014), «The Ice Road» (2021), and «In the Land of Saints and Sinners» (2023), Liam Neeson is an unexpected yet delightful choice for this eccentric cop—who, at one point, flashes his bright red underwear. Audiences have praised the casting, noting that Neeson’s stern demeanor makes his portrayal of a self-serious oddball all the more comical and convincing.
Before the teaser dropped, fans of the original «Naked Gun» feared the reboot might lose the sharp, irreverent humor that defined the trilogy. Their concerns were understandable. The film’s original creators, David Zucker and Pat Proft, stepped away from the project after their edgy gags were deemed too provocative. Yet the teaser has rekindled hope, suggesting the reboot might still deliver. One scene features the son of Detective Nordberg—originally played by O.J. Simpson (1947-2024)—refusing to say anything kind about his father. This likely nods to the real-life controversy surrounding Simpson, accused of murdering his ex-wife, hinting that the film’s dark humor remains intact.
The movie is helmed by director Akiva Schaffer, who also co-wrote the script alongside Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. The trio previously teamed up for the comedy «Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers» (2022). Joining Neeson are Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Kevin Durand, rounding out a promising ensemble.
