Les Nixes - Anti Climb Paint
This is not the first collaboration between trombonist Patrick Charbonnier and saxophonist Ted Milton.
The encounter took place around a project by the Bampots wind quartet, reinterpreting compositions by the group Blurt with Ted as guest.
This was followed by a Ciné-concert-oratorio, Le Bonheur, with a screening of Medvedkine's masterpiece (ref CD: ARFI AM054), in which bassist Eric Brochard also played.
The conception of the Les Nixes project (title taken from a poem by Apollinaire) is a little unusual.
In 2021, during the lockdown, Ted wrote a collection of poems, Anti-climb paint (of which he gave a handwritten edition of ten copies; vinyl inside - included in the download).
At Patrick's suggestion, the author recorded it in London. Patrick and Eric then integrated these thirty or so short poems into their music, which consists of a long improvisation on amplified trombone, bass and effects.
After this recording, the trio is now keen to find the stage for a completely different interpretation of this suite.
Biographies
Trained as a double bassist, Eric Brochard never ceases to research and develop his sound, favoring (automatic) gesture writing, versatile rhythms, melodic parts scratched by accidents along the way... He gives each of his performances a ceremonious and random character, inventing organic music in perpetual motion.
Today, Eric shares his work on double bass (recording of "Coding Music" and "Continuum", and a third album in preparation) with research on electric bass and electronic effects, which he develops to create sound spaces around drones (Obscur project, created around texts by the poet Aleister Crowley), the trio Les Nixes (with P. Charbonnier and T. Milton), and the duo Noorg.
Whatever the musical context, Patrick Charbonnier uses the trombone in an extreme expressive mode. In recent years, his practice of the instrument has led him to seek out original amplification techniques to enhance its acoustic possibilities. His current projects include Kill Your Idols (a brassy power septet), Les NIxes (Milton/Brochard/Charbonnier), De l'angle mort (a duo with Lionel Marchetti) and LE UN (a large orchestra of 25 improvisers). For the past 14 years, Patrick, founder of the association pépète lumière, has been organizing an itinerant festival in rural areas (southern Burgundy), combining experimental artistic practices: music, dance, performance, installation, etc...
